The second session about Stortelling took place on the 11th of September at 4pm.
It started by a presentation of the team leaders and the facilitators Syrine Landolsi and Rachida Rdhioui.
We hosted Besan Wattad for the second time and she started by making a word cloud with the participants based on what word comes to their mind when they hear storytelling.
Then she did a PowerPoint presentation. First, she defined storytelling as a reminder and a synthesis of the first session. Then, she presented in details the elements of a story with examples. She talked about the 5Ws : when, what, why, who, where and the importance in helping the audience imagine the characters and the story. She insisted on including details, describing colors, patterns, and using the 5 senses.
She mentioned as well that it is necessary to know your audience. The participants engaged with the speaker and asked many questions, most of them about how to overcome the fear of sharing a story especially orally.
We also were divided into breakout rooms for an interactive activity where the participants got to put in practice all the tips they’ve learnt. They had to write a short story about a dinner, using at least 3 senses and the 5Ws, then participants shared their stories.
At the end, the speaker talked about the relationship between storytelling and mental health and how storytelling makes us feel less alone, cultivates empathy, can raise awareness about mental health issues, and open discussion about topics that are silenced or left out.
