Late at night, at the metro station, stood x, a college student, waiting for his colleagues. He noticed an anxious looking man watching every move he makes. Afraid, he began to walk away from the empty station. The man followed. X began to jog desperately and the stranger picked up his pace shortly after, until they reached a dark alley. It seemed that the creepy man had studied the street very well to know the perfect place to attack and pull out his weapon to force the victim to hand him any valuable possessions he may have and then flee away.
This robbery and other similar assaults are known in Tunisia with the French term “braquage", which is an unplanned assault against random victims. In other words, it is based on pure coincidence. Indeed, the robber’s intention is to steal from anyone he comes across with no particular target in mind.
The second clause of the Algerian-Tunisian magazine set the penalty of such assault using a bladed weapon with 12 years in prison.
In the last few years, the number of robberies has been rising. According to the Ministry of Interior 59500 assaults occurred in the first few months of 2016 alone.
According to statistics made by the “Sabah" newspaper, every hour in Tunisia, two robberies occur and despite the improvement in police performance since 2018, such cases are still rising in frightening numbers which requires a fast intervention of the government officials to reduce their spread in society.
