Consumed By Social Media

Updated: May 3, 2021

Despite its significant contribution to the upgrade our daily lives in practically all the aspects, technological advancement has contributed to the disturbance of our general well-being.

The general lifestyle of internet users, especially teenagers and the youthful population has changed, as technology has become a second nature in their daily lives. As a matter of fact, technology has become an essential tool that youngsters rely on to manage their lives. With the facilities provided to obtain internet connection, time spent on the internet, especially on social media, increased drastically.

Social media has become a major source of stress, chronic anxiety and depression to its users. In fact, a study that was published by the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology in 2018 proved the existence of a strong correlation between a prolonged use of social media and depression. Moreover, according to recent statistics, suicide rates have gone up dramatically over the past 5 years; these high rates were mainly linked to excessive social media use.

Furthermore, recent studies conducted on mental health and social media demonstrated fundamental changes in users’ behaviour; as they gradually incorporated unhealthy habits in their daily lives that consist mainly of constant “posting” and updating their social media accounts.

It is undeniable that social media is a very powerful tool, especially in the communication and information sector, yet it is crucial to point out its harmful side effects.

We often forget that not everything we see on social media is true and we start hanging on unrealistic expectations from ourselves, and we end up being disappointed for not meeting those expectations. If you are not doing much today, it doesn’t mean you are a loser; success measures vary from one person to another.

We are human beings and we are easily influenced by our surroundings, so create the environment that helps you grow and evolve without pushing your mental health beyond its capacity.

Social media is indispensable in our lives today, but it can have severe damaging impacts on our general well being if not used correctly.
